Silence isn’t empty—it’s a leadership skill. Here’s how learning to pause transformed how I listen, lead, and coach.
“Don’t talk unless you can improve the silence.” Jorge Luis Borges
As someone who makes a living speaking, coaching, and challenging leaders, this quote hits home.
Early in my career, silence made me uncomfortable. As a trial attorney, my success depended on how effective I was at talking. And I was successful—at least by those standards.
I filled every pause with words—arguments, advice, or authority.
But with experience (and a few hard lessons), I learned that silence isn’t empty; it’s the space where thought, reflection, and truth can surface.
As the No B.S. Leadership Coach, I remind leaders that silence often carries more power than speech.
☑️ It’s the pause that lets others process.
☑️ It’s the moment that invites participation.
☑️ It’s the restraint that turns reaction into reflection.
When leaders master silence, they gain clarity—and so do their teams.
Three Ways Silence Strengthens Leadership
- Listen to understand, not to reply.
True listening transforms relationships and decisions. - Pause before responding.
A measured answer builds credibility and trust. - Let others fill the space.
When you stop talking, people step up—and you give them the opportunity to display their intelligence and potential.
Effective leaders know when their words add value—and when silence says more.
I could be wrong… but I’m not.
